Sarnu Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Early Cretaceous

Province:
NW.India Rajastan-Barmer Basin

Type Locality and Naming

OUTCROP: Type section is in Outcrops at Sarnu hill near Sarnu Village. The formation was designated by Dasgupta et al, 1973 after Sarnu village. [Original Publication: Dasgupta, S.K., Dhar, C.L and Mehta, V.K., 1973: Progress report in western Rajasthan Shelf, ONGC report. (unpublished)]

[Figure 1: Location map of West Rajasthan Basins (after Pandey and Dave, 1998)]

Lithology and Thickness

Conglomerate to coarse-grained Sandstone. It is represented by indurated fine-pebble, feldspathic sandstone with plant fossils. In the type area the thickness varies from 41 m to 83 m from east to west.

Lithology Pattern:
Coarse-grained sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The lower boundary is unconformable onto the underlying Malani Volcanic Fm (Large Igneous Province; Precambrian age)

Upper contact

The upper boundary is unconformable with Fatehgarh Fm.

GeoJSON

{"type":"Feature","geometry":{"type":"MultiPolygon","coordinates":[[[[70.79,25.63],[71.05,26.35],[71.53,26.53],[71.72,26.19],[71.54,25.64],[70.79,25.63]]]]}}

Fossils

Devoid of fauna. However presence of abundant cycades and ferns i.e Ptillophyllum acutifolium and Matanioiaceous from this formation suggest Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous age.

Age

Similar floral assemblage has also been recorded from Pariwar Fm of the Jaisalmer Basin which has been dated as Early Cretaceous on faunal evidence.
